Durham Free Lunch Initiative was formed as a response to the Covid-19 Crisis. Our goal is to provide a healthy, accessible meal for anyone who is food insecure: Durham Public Schools students, our unhoused/housing-insecure population, and workers who have been laid off due to COVID-19. We serve a thousand lunches per week, no hassle, no questions asked.
We support local farms that have lost restaurant buyers, as well as local businesses, such as Durham’s Ninth Street bakery. And we have also been able to help support the re-opening of local restaurant Geer St. Garden in a safe and healthy capacity, by helping to pay a living wage to all of their staff.
We rely on community donations to feed people, and our funding is once again approaching zero. We need your help. As the pandemic has continued to impact Durham's most vulnerable communities, we have only seen the need for our service increase. Every weekday, we serve many of the same regulars who have come to depend on us for a solid meal and friendly conversation. Contrary to our name, it takes about $5000/week to run Durham Free Lunch.
Can you contribute to extend this service? Any donation helps, but we especially appreciate recurring, monthly donations since it provides a secure base to build from.
Thank you so much for contributing!
